Recreation Assistant
Part Time: Permanent
SUMMARY
Under the leadership of the Recreation Manager, the Recreation Assistant is responsible for assisting in all wellness programs i.e. activities in the community that focus on Mind, Body and Soul, (physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual activities for the residents). This individual must possess the skills necessary to be creative and self-motivated.
Reports to: Recreation Manager
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience working in a long-term care setting, preferably in a Retirement Home or equivalent knowledge with relevant experience
- A community college diploma in recreation.
- Experience working with seniors and cognitive impairments including Alzheimer's and Dementia
- Empathy for and understanding of the needs of the elderly and/or mentally/physically disabled.
- Ability to relate to all levels of staff, residents and their families, volunteers with a high degree of patience, tolerance and confidentiality.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Assists in planning, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic physical, emotional, spiritual, social and intellectual programs.
- Proficiency with office equipment (phone systems, computer, fax, copiers, word, excel, database management etc.)
- Must be flexible to work evening and weekends where required.
- Ability to work well on their own as well as be a team player
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Seniors' fitness certification an asset
- Smart Serve considered an asset
- Knowledge of the RHRA legislation requirements
- Drivers' License and ability to obtain special class license as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with planning and preparing a monthly activity calendar and newsletter.
- Promotes an enjoyable, relaxed and entertaining environment within the community.
- Promotes participation in Activity programs.
- Ensures all programs on the monthly calendar are implemented in the Recreation Manager’s absence.
- Assists in the orientation and supervision of volunteers as required.
- Completes tasks with the Department as designated by the Recreation Manager (e.g. decorating, shopping etc.)
- Maintains and organizes clean program areas, equipment and resources.
- Supervises and transports residents on planned excursions including driving the residence van as required.
- Flexibility with other duties as assigned with ability to manage multiple priorities and multi-task
